How to Prepare Young Kids for a Photo Session
Feeling a bit uncertain about how your young children will do during your family photo session? You’re not alone! It’s completely normal to have those worries. While we all want everyone to be “picture perfect,” I can assure you that the best moments are captured when you shift your focus from how your kids are feeling in front of the camera and instead embrace the fun of being together!
Preparation can make a world of difference, so I've created a list of seven tips to help you set your kids up for success! With these ideas in your back pocket, you’ll feel more confident and ready for the big day.
Choose Comfortable Outfits
First things first, let’s talk outfits. You want to select clothing that not only looks adorable but also allows your little ones to feel comfortable and free. Think about fabrics that let them jump, twirl, and strike their best superhero poses without a hitch! Consider coordinating colors or themes that align beautifully with the natural surroundings, but remember—the ultimate goal is to have the kids feel at ease in what they’re wearing.
2. Build Excitement Ahead of Time
A week or so before the session, chat with your kids about what to expect. Build up that excitement like you’re gearing up for an exciting adventure! Discuss the fun things they’ll get to do during the shoot, and prepare them for some posing too. You can even playfully turn the session into a game: “Who can come up with the silliest face for the camera?” This will not only lighten the mood but also encourage them to express their fun personalities.
3. Embrace the Chaos
Photographing kids can sometimes feel like herding cats, but that’s okay! Remember, it’s all about capturing those genuine moments—even if it involves a snack crumb or two on their shirt. Kids can be unpredictable, and those candid shots often turn out to be the most memorable.
4. Create a Calm Environment
On the day of the shoot, arrive early to the location to allow your child to explore the environment. Point out interesting things around them. This helps to alleviate stress and allows them to feel comfortable in the new space. Encourage them to breathe deeply and enjoy the moment.
5. Stay Positive and Playful
Your energy can significantly influence your child’s mood. Keep the atmosphere positive and playful throughout the shoot. Avoid putting too much pressure on them to perform; instead, celebrate their authentic moments. Capture those giggles and genuine smiles, which make for truly beautiful photographs. With plenty of patience and a positive mindset you’re set for a memorable photography session that captures your family beautifully.
6. Incorporate Their Interests
If your child has favorite toys or special item, incorporate those into the photoshoot. Whether it’s a beloved stuffed animal or a favorite book, these elements can serve as great conversation starters with the photographer and help your child feel more at ease.
7. Sweeten the Deal
And if all else fails? A little bribery never hurt anyone! Mention their favorite sweet treat such as ice cream or a fun outing after the session as a motivation. Sometimes a scoop of chocolate can work wonders to bring out the best smiles!
